Cleaning Solar Cells

The picture shows a solar panel with Gochermann cell lamination. It can be seen that there is a lot of contamination due to spraying the array with regular tap water and shipping. In the middle of the photo, there's a small strip which seems to be clean. This was achieved by applying a special 3M tape to the surface. The tape does not damage the pyramid structure. Several other methods were tested but found not useful. During the preparations for WSC 2001, the Mad Dog team spend almost a week cleaning with very good results.

Here is a paper -briefly- covering topics of interest to beggining solar car enthusiasts. Some parts are outdated, but obvious in that sense.

Cell active area can be tested by putting a cell in forward bias. The cell essentially then becomes an LED and glows where there is active area.
